The Father & Son Team Behind the Music of Cinema Paradiso

 

In 1988, Italian composer and conductor Ennio Morricone collaborated with his son Andrea Morricone in composing the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. This movie is one of the most critically acclaimed films that won the top prizes in the Cannes and in the Golden Globe Awards.

Cinema Paradiso is probably the most renowned of Morricone's works. Josh Groban performed this in his debut concert with Italian lyrics added by Allesio De Sensi.

Ennio Morricone's music for Cinema Paradiso is simply wonderful. Whether you've seen the film or not, it's hard not to love the melodies in this score. The main theme is really catchy and you'll be humming it everywhere you go.

Acapella Arrangement of the Love Theme

During the last quarter of 2011, I made an acapella arrangement of this song for male voices.

Set in TTBB parts with a Soloist, I tried to recreate in the different voice sections the lucid passages that an orchestral instrument plays to intensify a particular mood.

In fact, it will be easy for a Choir Director to interpret the arrangement and achieve proper voice texture if he is also knowledgeable or at least familiar with the sounds of the instruments used in the recording or performance of this love song. The choir director may also refer to videos of live concerts available in YouTube. This will give him the visual knowledge to use vocal improvisation of several orchestral sounds needed to bring-about an assortment of emotions.

The Art of Singing Bel Canto

Bel canto means, most literally, "beautiful singing." It is a term used to describe all Italian singing, but in particular the light, bright quality that Italian opera singers use to charm audiences. Despite bel canto's popularity, it is shrouded in obscurity. The history of this art is a complicated and mysterious one.

Bel canto emerged in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but its roots lie all the way through the Middle Ages. It began in the singing instruction that Italian masters provided their students. Because singing must be mastered internally, teaching singing is tricky. Italian masters relied on a system of teaching and listening to their pupils. When the pupil created a tone or sound that was of admirable quality, the master would urge that pupil to repeat the sound until it was ingrained in their memory. This practice became so inherent to Italian singers that Italian singing became shrouded in mystery. Many thought that Italy was protecting its singing mastery from foreign countries, when in reality it was simply espousing a valuable teaching style.

Bel canto was initially used by men, and, at its earliest, by male religious singers. The Italian castrati were famous for their use of this singing style. During the time of the Renaissance, the period when opera was created in Italy, bel canto became the singing style used for this new art form. Later, it became famous through use by other operatic singers, notably sopranos. Today, sopranos like Aileen Cura and Tenors in the league of Sal Malaki and Nolyn Cabahug are among the singers that keep this tradition alive.

Philippines Wins Top Prize in WCOPA 2008

LOS ANGELES, California—Vocalists from the Philippines and Jamaica were awarded top honors in the 2008 World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) or the Hollywood Olympics' grand finals night held at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel on Friday, July 25. Junior contestant Catherine Loria from the Philippines and senior contestant Andrew Clarke from Jamaica were proclaimed Grand Champion Performers of the World.

13-year old Catherine, who hails from Tiaong, Quezon province, has duplicated fellow Filipino singer Aria Clemente's feat last year. Catherine sang Yolanda Adam's version of "I Believe I Can Fly" at the finals. She bested fellow junior contestants Tippy delos Santos and Rachel Razon, junior vocalists also from the Philippines, Courtney Mary Janssen from New Zealand, and Oleksandr Chernenko from Ukraine.

The female Grand Champion Performer had five vocal entries in the preliminary round; namely Broadway, Country & Western, Gospel, Pop, and R&B/Soul/Jazz. Catherine sang the solo version of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston's "When You Believe" in the semi-final round.

Actor and classical singer Clarke has beaten senior vocalists Marielle Corpuz from the Philippines, Noryn Aziz from Malaysia and Nataly Gordienco from Moldova. Clarke also received US $10,000 in scholarship awarded by the School for Film and Television in New York.

Patterned after the Olympics, outstanding amateur and professional performing artists from the United States and over 40 countries have competed in this esteemed international event.

From the selection process administered by licensed scouts, and National Directors (Philippine directors are Carlo Orosa and Oliver Oliveros), contestants were screened, qualified and invited to represent their respective countries at WCOPA, which is now on its 12th year.

Included in the competition categories were dance, vocal, modeling, acting, instrumental and variety acts.

2008 Team Philippines' vocalists Panky Trinidad, Dex De Rosa, Abegail Dorado, Glee Nette Gaddi, and the Sison brothers (Marek, Enzo, Ruiz) made it to the semi-final round. They have received semi-final round medals.

The rest of the Philippines' competing vocalists in both junior and senior divisions failed to get ahead of round one. Contestants in the preliminary round have received gold, silver, bronze medals, etc. as special awards based on the scores given by the judges.

This year's judges included hotshots from the National Association of Record Industry Professionals, J Records and RCA Music Group, LA Models, casting department of TNT's The Closer and CBS' The Class, cast of hit film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Skull, Geffen Records, creative team behind "The People's Choice Awards" and "The Golden Globe Awards," and Disney Entertainment Productions. Other people who came were the management group of Eva Longoria, Mario Lopez, and Lee Ann Rhimes, as well as the casting agency for Broadway's Jersey Boys, Wicked, Legally Blonde, Phantom of the Opera, and A Chorus Line.

The Philippines has been a strong force to be reckoned with since it joined the “talent Olympics” last 2005. Catherine's big win has made her the fifth Grand Champion Vocalists of the World from the Philippines after Jed Madela in 2005, The Cercado Sisters in 2006, Reymond Sajor and Aria Clemente in 2007. Both Jed and Aria performed in the opening and closing ceremonies of 2008 WCOPA.
